this is a recently acquired photo of Markova, signed in 1957 so one assumes it was taken sometime before that and that Dame A liked it well enough, as she signed it for the original owner.
i assume it's a "Dying Swan" costume; it seems affixed with a red-gemstone on the bodice, supporting Markova's own words describing her understanding that Fokine's 'swan' has been 'shot' before the the time of the dance.
in any case RIP Alicia Makarova.
