Film director Martin Scorsese has adored The Red Shoes ever since his father took him to see it when he was a child and in this wonderful interview in The Independent he explains its importance in his life.
http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertai...rt-1685003.html I love this film too and would do so even if I had no interest in ballet whatsoever, it holds a fascination for me I can't really explain. Perhaps with the new restored version being screened in Cannes it will get a release and captivate a whole new generation of fans. |

My thanks, too, Mashinka!
Scorcese's long-time editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, was married to Michael Powell later in his life until he died. Terry Gross did a wonderful interview with her, in which she talks about working with Scorcese and her relationship with Powell: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5532408 (Click the "Listen Now" link towards the top left.) Edited to Add: In the interview, Schoonmaker speaks about Powell's influence on Scorcese at length. |

Isn't it exciting to know that some artists are invested in preserving the past and acknowledging the work that influenced them as much as they are interested in creating new work? (Of course, Scorcese is in a position - financial and artistic - that few attain, but still...)

There is a 2008 thread on this movie, to which dirac added the link to Scorcese's article a few days ago.
http://ballettalk.invisionzone.com/index.p...mp;#entry247705 I'm sorry, but I won't have time right now to combine the threads. If it seems to be a good idea, perhaps another Mod can do so .... ? |
