We've recently had a new poster from Cyprus. I know we have a loyal group from the U.K. and certainly a prime poster or two from France. We have one for sure from Scotland... Which other countries do people hail from?

Great question!
I don't mean to spoil the fun - and I hope all of the people who are from these countries will say "Canada here!" or whatever, but I just checked our stats for September, and here's who was here. The order is the number of "pages served."
Canada
United Kingdom
Finland
Australia
Japan
France
Uruguay
Singapore
Netherlands
Belgium
Germany
Denmark
US Military
Russian Federation
Sweden
New Zealand (Aotearoa)
South Africa
Austria
Italy
Brazil
Greece
Israel
Cyprus
I haven't checked the stats in about six months -- this is just for the message board, not the main site, but we had 18,000"unique visitors" last month. That's not one person sitting here clicking 18,000 times; that's 18,000 PEOPLE. Gosh. Probably half were checking up on Volochkova, but hey. Not bad.
So who here is from Austria, Germany, Brazil, Israel, France, Russia, etc?

Well, this makes me feel boring. I'm Canadian, and currently living in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Although the hurricane this week was anything but boring...
Oh, Adrienne - please neither you nor where you live are boring!! If you want to know what boring is - try a suburb of New York City.

Adrienne, you live in an area dear to my heart. 1. It's Anne of Green Gables country (after she grew older and moved from PWI). 2. It's the original site of the Acadians, an incredible group of people in terms of keeping their traditions alive against the odds (of colonialism). 3. Halifax may well be the most environmentally conscientious community in the world, banning public use of fragrance and phasing out the use of commercial pesticides on lawns. 4. My dearest ever ballet teacher founded Halifax's ballet company many years ago. Beautiful country you hail from.

Awww, thanks. I'm actually from Cape Breton, which is dear to
my heart, but going to school in Halifax. I'm currently a student at Dalhousie University, which is where Lucy Maud Montgomery graduated from, and Redmond College from
Anne of the Island is based on it.
(Oh, yeah, and Anne was actually born in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. As far as I know it's a fictional town. I'm obviously a big Anne of Green Gables fan-- this happens when you are a strange, precocious red-haired girl-child, whether you want it to or not.)

I was neither red-headed or freckled, but I loved Anne of Green Gables and still do. I have always wanted to visit the area where the story is set. But, for now, my vacations are always around wherever my daughter goes for an SI. However, maybe one day...
By the way, being from Oklahoma, all the places that the international posters are from sound very exciting to me! (No, I don't know anyone who lives in a teepee. Yes, I've been in a tornado. And yes, I do have a few native americans in my family tree!) :grinning:

Hi, I'm from middle Georgia and that's really exciting, I can tell you! By the way, I love Anne of Green Gables, too. I even gave my third daughter Anne as a middle name- with an "e" of course. It's more distinguished that way!
Pretty soon, I'm going to do a read through of this thread and make a preliminary "accounting" of what countries are represented here. I know there are more of you out there, and we'd love to hear from you.
Just as an aside here, I believe that when Ballet Talk changed its server, etc., certain things didn't always make the cut - as in poster's "locations"...so if you do want people to know where you hail from - whether it's Germany or Kansas - go in to "My Controls" and update your profile, if you feel like it, that is.

Yes, please do; it's not absolutely mandatory (retroactively), but it helps when someone wants a certain product and I advise them to try a store in New York or Chicago, and they turn out to be in Latvia!

Hi Funny Face

I have left from Almaty, Kazakhstan for Toronto, Canada just few months ago, and before then I've managed to put several adds on this site about the Almaty National Ballet. I am a great fan of the Almaty National Ballet and Opera and a friend to some ballerinas and dancers of our ballet (and am very proud of it

)
If you would like to read about 'what kind of ballet culture' is present there, i can tell you briefly that it is based on mainly St.Petersburg classic ballet school - as famous Russian ballerina Galina Ulanova has visited Almaty during the WWII and aftewards - she helped with staging Swan Lake and several other ballets. Besides, several of the soloists who are dancing in Almaty Ballet right now, have graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy, St. Petersburg, and several others from the Moscow Ballet Academy. So it is really classic and is supported by the Russian ballet traditions.
On the other hand, National Ballet and Opera are indeed using Kazakh national folk treasures and there are some ballets and operas created by the legends, myths and historical events of the Kazakh people. Kazakh national costumes are presented in those operas and ballets with great details and colors. THey are really beatiful, and i can't wait until i gain the necessary number of adds placed in this forum, so I would finally have a permit to start placing photographs i've taken of our ballet dancers and opera singers to share them with the rest of the people who visit this site!!
IF you are interested in getting an idea about who dances in Almaty right now and what are they like, please go to the European Ballet Companies section on this site and closer to the bottom of the list there must be Almaty National Ballet listed - there are several adds for you to read. I've also listed a repertoir of the Almaty National Ballet there.
Have fun!
Marianna
Caro, Eve27, kleighfer, Adrienne, temple dancer, floss, ivy'smama, Swiss Chard, A local foreigner in Almaty, and Marianna - many thanks to you all for helping to create a more
united group of nations and countries here on Ballet Talk - and for the extras you bring to the cyber table as well!

It makes for a much more well rounded conversation. :gossip:

Hi Xena. The closest I can come is having relatives on my maternal grandmother's side from Hungary. And, including a Hungarian suite in our dance company's repertoire. I swear, you all sound so exotic. I am also wondering how many of you who have posted in this thread are multi-lingual.

As the year is drawing to a close, thought I'd update this thread a bit by combining Alexandra's list with a few additions we've picked up since then. Naturally there may well be other posters who haven't added to this list, but it's ever growing, I'm sure.

And of course there are posters from certain countries, such as Lithuania, who are now living in the US and other places, too. :grinning:
