Additional casting for American Ballet Theatre’s 2007 Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House, May 14-July 7, was announced today by Artistic Director Kevin McKenzie.

Principal Dancers for the engagement will include Nina Ananiashvili, Maxim Beloserkovsky, Jose Manuel Carreño, Angel Corella, Herman Cornejo, Irina Dvorovenko, Alessandra Ferri, Marcelo Gomes, David Hallberg, Paloma Herrera, Julie Kent, Vladimir Malakhov, Gillian Murphy, Xiomara Reyes, Ethan Stiefel, Diana Vishneva and Michele Wiles.

Guest artists for the engagement include Roberto Bolle, a resident guest artist with La Scala in Milan, Guillaume Côté, a principal dancer with National Ballet of Canada, Desmond Richardson, artistic director of Complexions dance company and former ABT Principal Dancer, and Rasta Thomas.

Countrywide Financial is the National Sponsor of American Ballet Theatre. Superfund Asset Management, Inc. and Northern Trust are the sponsors of ABT’s Metropolitan Opera House Season. World Premiere

The World Premiere of ABT’s all-new production of The Sleeping Beauty is scheduled for Friday evening, June 1 with Veronika Part as Princess Aurora and Marcelo Gomes as Prince Désiré. Part and Gomes will reprise their roles on Monday, June 4. Paloma Herrera and Angel Corella will debut in the leading roles at the Saturday, June 2 matinee performance with a repeat of their roles on Thursday evening, June 7. Julie Kent and Ethan Stiefel will perform the leading roles on the evenings of June 2 and June 5. Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky will debut in the leading roles at the Wednesday, June 6 matinee and Friday evening, June 8. Diana Vishneva will perform the role of Aurora for the first time with ABT, opposite Vladimir Malakhov as Prince Désiré, on Wednesday evening, June 6 and again on Saturday evening, June 9. Gillian Murphy and David Hallberg will debut in the leading roles at the Saturday, June 9 matinee.

The Sleeping Beauty, with choreography after Marius Petipa, will be staged by Kevin McKenzie and Gelsey Kirkland, with assistance by Michael Chernov. Revival

Commissioned by American Ballet Theatre in 1997, Lar Lubovitch’s Othello will have its New York Revival Premiere on Tuesday evening, May 22 with Julie Kent as Desdemona and Marcelo Gomes in the title role. Gillian Murphy and David Hallberg will perform the leading roles at the matinee on Wednesday, May 23. Guest artist Rasta Thomas will perform the title role on Wednesday evening, May 23 opposite Xiomara Reyes. Alessandra Ferri will debut in the role of Desdemona opposite guest artist Desmond Richardson as Othello on Thursday evening, May 24. Othello is choreographed by Lubovitch and set to a commissioned score by Elliot Goldenthal. The full-evening ballet features scenery by George Tsypin, costumes by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting by Pat Collins and projections by Wendall K. Harrington. The ballet received its revival premiere on January 11, 2007 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Othello will be given four performances through May 24. Returning Classics

Following the Opening Night Gala, American Ballet Theatre will present eight consecutive performances of Natalia Makarova’s La Bayadère, beginning Tuesday evening, May 15. Set to the music of Ludwig Minkus and arranged by John Lanchbery, La Bayadère features scenery by PierLuigi Samaritani, costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge and lighting by Toshiro Ogawa. Conceived and directed by Makarova after Marius Petipa, La Bayadère was given its World Premiere by ABT in 1980. The season’s first performance of the full-evening ballet will feature Paloma Herrera as Nikiya, Angel Corella as Solor and Gillian Murphy as Gamzatti. This production was generouslysupported through an endowed gift from Ruth and Harold Newman. La Bayadère is presented in loving memory of Mrs. Caroline Newhouse.

The season’s first performance of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Manon is scheduled for Monday evening, June 11 with Alessandra Ferri in the title role and guest artist Roberto Bolle as Des Grieux, Herman Cornejo as Lescaut and Gillian Murphy as Lescaut’s Mistress. Set to a score by Jules Massenet and inspired by the novel Manon Lescaut, Manon was staged for ABT by Monica Parker and features scenery and costumes by Nicholas Georgiadis and lighting by Thomas Skelton. Manon was given its World Premiere by The Royal Ballet at the Royal Opera House in London on
March 7, 1974 and was first performed by ABT at the Metropolitan Opera House on May 28, 1993. This production was generously supported through an endowed gift from Anka K. Palitz, in memory of Clarence Y. Palitz, Jr.

Diana Vishneva and Angel Corella will lead the season’s first performance of Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet on Monday evening, June 18. Set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliet features scenery and costumes by Nicholas Georgiadis and lighting by Thomas Skelton. Principal Dancer Alessandra Ferri will dance her final performance with American Ballet Theatre in the role of Juliet on Saturday evening, June 23 at the Metropolitan Opera House. In her final bow as Juliet, Ferri will dance opposite guest artist Roberto Bolle as Romeo. Romeo and Juliet, scheduled for eight performances through June 23, received its World Premiere by The Royal Ballet in London on February 9, 1965 and was given its ABT Company Premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House on April 22, 1985. ABT’s production of Romeo and Juliet is generously underwritten through an endowed gift from Ali and Monica Wambold. Additional funding has been provided by the Audrey Love Charitable Foundation.

Eight performances of Swan Lake, choreographed by Kevin McKenzie after Marius Petipa, will be given beginning Monday evening, June 25 with Irina Dvorovenko and Maxim Beloserkovsky leading the opening night cast. Swan Lake is set to the score by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky and features scenery and costumes by Zack Brown and lighting by Duane Schuler. This production of Swan Lake premiered on March 24, 2000 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Swan Lake is generously underwritten by The Rosh Foundation.

Last season’s Company Premiere of James Kudelka’s Cinderella will conclude the season with seven performances beginning Monday evening, July 2. The three-act ballet, set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev, features scenery and costumes by David Boechler and lighting by Christopher Dennis. Kudelka’s Cinderella was given its World Premiere by The National Ballet of Canada in Toronto, Canada on May 8, 2004. This production was generously supported through an endowed gift from Monica, Stefano, Cosima, and Tassilo Corsi. This production is made possible with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.


Returning Repertory

Eight performances of repertory, May 25 through May 31, will also be featured as part of American Ballet Theatre’s Spring Season. The program will include George Balanchine’s Symphonie Concertante followed by Sir Frederick Ashton’s The Dream.

Set to Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat Major for Violin and Viola, Symphonie Concertante was created in 1947 for Ballet Society and received its ABT Company Premiere in 1983. The ballet features costumes by Theoni V. Aldredge and lighting by David K.H. Elliott. This production of Symphonie Concertante is staged by Susan Jones. The season’s first performance of the ballet on Friday evening, May 25 will feature Julie Kent, Marcelo Gomes and Paloma Herrera in the leading roles. Symphonie Concertante has been made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.

Sir Frederick Ashton’s The Dream, staged by Anthony Dowell with Christopher Carr, is set to music by Felix Mendelssohn, with sets and costumes by David Walker and lighting by John B. Reed. Ashton’s The Dream received its World Premiere by The Royal Ballet in 1964. Adapted from A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, The Dream was first performed by ABT in May 2002 at the Metropolitan Opera House. Xiomara Reyes will make her debut as Titania opposite Ethan Stiefel as Oberon and Herman Cornejo as Puck in the season’s first performances of The Dream on Friday evening, May 25. The Dream is presented in loving memory of Clarence Y.Palitz, Jr. by his family. Performances of The Dream have been made possible with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. ABTKids

ABTKids, the annual one-hour introduction to ballet, is scheduled for Saturday, June 9 at 11:30am. This season’s performance of ABTKids, Sleeping Beauty and Friends, will also feature a special appearance by Angelina Ballerina. All tickets for ABTKids are $25.

Pre-Performance Workshops

Workshops are held in the rehearsal studios of the Metropolitan Opera House. Tickets to the workshops are $20 per person and are only available to ticket holders for the matinee performance following the workshop.

Brava Veronika! I was going to skip the premiere but this puts a whole new spin on things. Also, I think I recall the original press release for Sleeping Beauty listing the staging credits as “staged by Kevin McKenzie, assisted by Gelsey Kirkland” and I can't help noticing that this press release says "staged by Kevin McKenzie and Gelsey Kirkland assisted by Michael Chernov". Brava Gelsey!

Great news for Veronika!!!Although we usually think of Aurora as as a petite-type of dancer, we must remember that Martine Van Hammel was one of the most memorable Auroras in the previous ABT production. Is Veronika as tall as Martine?
Maybe they will finally promote her.

It may be the illusion of proportion -- Part has those LEGS! -- but I think she is taller than vanHamel.

It really IS great news. If she aquits herself well this season, I would imagine they would promote her. She's slated for the lead in 3 full length works, and this world premier is certainly a coup!

I have to say, this is so exciting to me. I've had just about the worst week possible, and having this to look forward to (on my Mom's bday no less) is really fantastic.

I'd have expected Part to be type-casted as Lilac (which I still hope she dances too). This is a bonus almost too good to be true: Mariinsky in Mariinsky!
Another huge plus is that Veronika's partner is Gomes, meaning he won't partner Vishneva: Diana's partner is now scheduled to be soul-mate Vladimir Malakhov! Even if the AD's creativity is not completely subdued by Gelsey Kirkland, such partnerships as these two pairings will deliver the goods.

Speaking of which, will ABT be releasing the casting for Lilac and Blue Bird? Sometimes, for me those roles make a differance in the performance I choose.

This is exciting and completely unexpected casting from ABT. When was the last time that they entrusted a full length premiere (let alone a $1million premiere) to a soloist? I was sure that we would see Nina in this premiere, but it looks like we will barely see her at all this season. It wasn't unexpected that Gelsey would fall in love with Veronika Part. Gelsey's meticulous, relentless pursuit of her vision should do wonders for Part. I'm so excited. I'm so excited to see what all the women look like after a strong dose of Gelsey.

I think, perhaps, this move was foreshadowed when they put Part in the Winter Gala at City Center in Symphonie Concertante. I suspect she will be advanced to pirincipal this season... ABT has lost several principals and Ferri is leaving after this Spring.

What happened to Ashley Tuttle?

Tuttle left to pursue other opportunities.

Although i was very pleased with the "surprise" casting of Veronika thrown to us by ABT, i am a bit disappointed that they did not surprised us with a brave,daring casting of one of the talented member of the corps as Aurora.They are probably playing it safe with this expensive production. Maybe, LA or DC will get the "surprise".

Great news for Veronika! I think a principal promotion is inevitable. It probably will be announced before the Met season, I'd guess.

while I'm sure that would be nice, it seems to me that there is a reason that there are corps members, soloists and principals in a company. As far as I know, very few of the dancers in ABT have done Sleeping Beauty (at least with ABT) because its been out of the rep for so long (I don't remember them doing it in at least the last 10 years, though I could be mistaken!)

thus very few of the principals have had the chance to dance aurora--so why wouldn't they be given the chance first? They are principals for a reason after all.

This has probably been answered on this thread somewhere before but can anybody guess when single tickets go on sale. I wasn't planning a trip to NY this summer but a Part-Gomes Sleeping Beauty may be too much to pass up.
And is it too soon to hope for a DVD????????

My season tix came in the mail today, but the seat assignment for Manon with Ferri has not been made. I suspect individual sales will be coming shortly now that the subs have been mailed out.

I went this morning to make my subscriber exchanges. Based on purchases and inquiry:
Vishneva is a very tough ticket. There were only extremely poor orchestra seats left for her first Sleeping Beauty, so going upstairs was an easy choice. Her Swan Lake, both Manons, both Bayaderes, ditto.
I was told that there are still some tickets in the Dress Circle for Ferri's Farewell. Almost a surprise, given it is part of a subs, and was also offered for priority purchase with the subscription material. (NYCB's Farewell for Nichols is non-subs and still the orchestra was sold out to those with priority. However the Met has a thousand more seats.)
Was able to get Row A Dress Circle for Ferri's final Manon.
Did decently well for Ananiashvili's Swan Lake and best of all for Part's.

drb,it sounds like we traded for all the same performances and, yes, it was tough to get the seats I wanted for most of them. At least I was able to get tickets that shouldn't be too bad, I was getting pretty nervous about that. I had tried to order a second sub - Sat night with the Ferri farewell and a Vishneva Bayadere but that didn't work out so I was very nervous about this exchange week and had multiple alternatives in mind when I went. I'm glad that's over, now I can't wait for the season to begin!

Does anyone know if ABT plans on releasing casting on other roles like Lilac and Blue Bird ppd in Sleeping Beauty? I know other posters have mentioned this. I'm not the biggest fan of story ballets so I like to know who I am seeing. NYCB does a better job in this way. I guess ABT trusts the star power of the leads to fill the house. I'm very interested in some of the up and comings!

I will post casting as it comes in. Some companies do release soloist casting but other's do not. ABT tends to release just lead roles. We'll see.

IIRC, for previous productions of the full ballet, they used to announce Carabosse, Lilac, Florine and Bluebird. It would be nice if they held to that tradition. All the Prologue Fairies and Wedding soloists might be too much to hope for from ABT.

Diana Vishneva's site confirms all 11 dates (including the Opening Night Gala) and partners; Nina's site likewise confirms her two listed performances in her Tour Schedule; but, unlike an earlier article on her site, makes no mention of the Gala. Any news about the Gala? The only casting I've seen is the pianist Lang Lang. He is fabulous, and earlier in his career did dance as he played--but not so much recently.

By the way, I'd not previously noticed the Telegraph article from last November on Nina's site. Ananiashvili tells about setting Ashton on her company, troubles with Russia, and includes a photo of 8 month old Helene with mother and father.

The website is a bit slow today, probably a lot of activity.

I bopped around various performances, the only one I saw that didn't have none or just one location sold
out was the Ferri Farewell Romeo. The website shows ALL locations sold except Family Circle. This may be a bit misleading as there may be partial view box seats available but the Met likes to sell them only at the BO so that that they can be sure ticket buyers know what they are getting. Actually, in my experience, if you are very carefull, some of the box seats are not so bad.

Something else I noticed on the Met website regarding standing room

Standing Room Tickets: Orchestra Standing Room tickets will be available beginning at 10am on the day of the performance. Family Circle Standing Room tickets will also be available on the "day of" for Saturday performances, and Monday through Friday performances when Family Circle Seating is sold out. Tickets are subject to availability and limited to two per person. Please note that a $5.50 per ticket service charge will apply.


This is a new policy this season at the opera. It did make some sense because Mo-Fr Family Circle seats and the FC standing room were the same price.

But will Standing Room for ABT be $24 for the Family Circle???????


One other thing, I didn't actually go all the way through with itbut I was testing buying a Standing Room online some months ago. Imagine that? I guess we'll see

I was at The Met today and picked up a copy of the latest casting sheet that is available where the various brochures are kept in the lobby. It is dated April 3rd. Desmond Richardson has been replaced as TBA with Ferri in Othello on May 24th. However, the website calendar still has him listed.

Just back from a very enjoyable Andrea Chenier at The Met. While there, I picked up yet another ABT casting sheet, this one dated April 6th. GOMES is now listed to dance with Ferri in Othello on May 24th. This will be extraordinary!

Great, I'm looking forward to that. I wonder what the deal was with Richardson though.

I dunno. Have always wanted to see Ferri and Gomes together in something dramatic. I've wished for a Romeo and Juliet and cannot begin to imagine what that would be like. There's still time for ABT to tweak the schedule. I think we, as devoted, hard working, ticket-buying loyalists, deserve (yes, deserve) a Gomes-Ferri Romeo and Juliet. I feel a petition evolving.

For worried web-buyers, ABT's web casting is now in 100% agreement with the cast sheet at The Met this morning.

Keeping in mind that Gomes is coming back from an injury, I thought the following performance tally for the Met season (extracted from bios on the website) was interesting:

7 - Beloserkovsky
7 - Carreno
13 - Corella
7 - Cornejo
19 - Gomes
14 - Hallberg

It just doesn't look final to me.

Very good point. And this doesn't count the Gala, nor two or three Rothbarts, his great role in Swan Lake, that is nearly comparable to dancing Siegfried. Moreover, he gets to lift some of the heaviest ballerinas. I recall Hallberg's comments last year on The Winger as to how killing dancing the male lead in Cinderella was for him and Gomes. And that comes at season's end.

Yikes! You're right. But that makes Gomes's total look even more unlikely doesn't it? I mean, 19 performances with the closest next total Corella with 11. I'm now beginning to wonder about those Sleeping Beauty dates, and whether he and Part are just keeping the spaces warm for someone else - like Ananiashvili. This male casting is really very lopsided.

Hmm, I agree about Gomes' total looking really out of keeping with the others.

I can't imagine that they would announce the world premiere of Sleeping Beauty as Part and Gomes as a placeholder however. They would have left it TBA, as it was until a few weeks ago.

I do suspect you are right that some of Gomes' castings will go away, however. 19 is a LOT more than anyone else...

19 is an indication that Marcelo's versatility is boundless.

One explanation why he has so many more is that he is the only man who will dance in both ballets on the mixed bill program -- Symphonie Concertante and The Dream.
