A check of the Benois site* now lists these six, including ABT's Marcelo Gomes, as the 2008 Benois laureates:

I'm glad Silvia Azzoni won! I haven't seen her in the ballet she won it for, The Little Mermaid, but I hope to next season. But she was wonderful in the other ballets I've seen her in smile.gif

Me too! I was glad to to see that both ballerinas and both male dancers all dance with passion and emotion.

Further confirmation and details are reported by Cuba's ACN news agency* regarding the two winners from that nation:

Maestro Fernando Alonso, one of the most relevant figures in the history of Cuban ballet, received on Wednesday the Benois Dance Prize at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, Russia, for his artistic career.

The jury granted Alonso this award – considered the Oscar of Dance in the world – in recognition of his work in the creation of the Cuban National Ballet, the Academy of Ballet and the Cuban National School of Arts, as well as for his contribution and pedagogical work in several countries for over 50 years....
...Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta, of the Royal Ballet Convent Garden of London, also received an award for his main role in ‘Spartacus’ by Khachaturian Grigorovich.

The Tartar Information Agency* English language site (obviously making use of some artificial translating program) gives more information on what each winner did to merit the Benois de la danse award:

In the nomination for the best male role statuettes of Banois-2008 was given to Carlos Acosta for the main role in the ballet Spartacus by Hachaturyan, staged by Grigorovitch; and Marcelo Gomes for a leading party in the stage C to C by American ballet theater in New York and for main role in the ballet Othello by American ballet theater in Washington.


Best dancing-girls became Italy's Silvia Acconi for the main role in the ballet Mermaid, staged by Hamburg ballet, Germany; and Tamara Roho for pas de de from the ballets Carmen and Esmeralda.


Jean Christof Mayo with the stage Faust by List was awarded for the best choreography.


The sixth statuette was given to 93-years old founder of the Cuba Ballet Fernando Alonso in the traditional nomination For Life in Art.

MARCELO GOMES WINS 2008 BENOIS DE LA DANSE PRIZE



American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Marcelo Gomes has taken the 2008 Benois de la Danse prize. The awards were announced at the Benois de la Danse ceremony and Charity Gala held on May 6 and 7 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

Gomes was recognized as best male dancer for his portrayal of the title role in Lar Lubovitch’s Othello, as well as his performances in Jorma Elo’s C. to C. (Close to Chuck) which premiered during American Ballet Theatre’s Fall season at New York City Center in October. Gomes, who shared the male dancer prize with Carlos Acosta, accepted the award in person and performed excerpts from Othello and C. to C. (Close to Chuck) opposite Julie Kent (a Benois de la Danse Laureate) at the Charity Gala.

The Benois de la Danse Prize was established in 1992 by the International Dance Association (now the International Dance Union) and UNESCO. The annual prize recognizes the achievements of the most outstanding choreographer, female dancer, male dancer, composer and designer of the previous year. Nominees and awardees are selected by an international jury of dance luminaries including company directors, teachers and well-known artists in the world of ballet.

Principal Dancer Gillian Murphy and ABT Master Teaching Associate Kirk Peterson each received nominations for this year’s Benois de la Danse Prize in the respective categories of most outstanding female dancer and choreographer.
