A discussion of the late Patrick Swayze's background in dance by Sanjoy Roy in The Guardian.

QUOTE
Swayze's dance training was central to his heart-throb appeal. In Dirty Dancing, dance is clearly used as a metaphor for sex: young Frances "Baby" Houseman (Jennifer Grey) learns how to dance with Johnny, and as they come together as a dancing couple, they become a sexual one too. For that to work at all it's not enough that Swayze looks really buff (OK, it's a big factor): he has to establish a physical rapport on the dance floor, otherwise we won't believe it's there in the bedroom. Dance training is vital for that. Compare Swayze's slow-burn smoulder with, say, Arnold Schwarzenegger's graceless fumblings in True Lies. Arnie is going through the motions and so his partner has to do the same; Swayze and Grey are coming together.

Breathing hard, the dancers head back into the studio, where the artistic team is already in action, dispensing corrections. Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson is giving Spaulding notes on how to make his brooding Rothbart more owlish, ballet master Betsy Erickson is working with the little cygnets, and Bruce Sansom - a newly appointed assistant to the artistic director - is coaching more loft into Zahorian's jumps.

With only days to go, the company is readying for its first tour to China, part of the official celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and China. The three-week tour will take the company to Beijing's Poly Theater and Shanghai's Grand Theatre. A scheduled performance in Suzhou was canceled when it turned out that the theater was needed for an official government event.
